On August 25, 2026, a special seminar on food safety management was held at Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL) in Timor-Leste as part of the Public-Private Partnership Project for Human Resource Development in the Food Industry in ASEAN, promoted by the ASEAN Secretariat.
Masanori Kotani, President of Japan Food Safety Management Association (JFSM), served as a lecturer and provided an overview of the fundamentals of food safety management required in the food industry, focusing on the principles of HACCP as well as GMP, food safety management systems (FSM), and food safety culture.

A total of 126 participants, including students, faculty members, food business operators, and government officials, attended the seminar. In light of the challenges facing Timor-Leste's food industry--including food labeling systems, testing and inspection systems, export certification, and human resource development--the participants shared the importance of making gradual and continuous improvements.

During the Q&A session, many questions were raised regarding topics such as how to implement HACCP, how to conduct hazard analysis, and the process of obtaining certification. The active discussion demonstrated a high level of interest in food safety and a strong need for human resource development.

JFSM hopes that this lecture will contribute to promoting a better understanding of food safety management and to developing human resources who will support the food industry in Timor-Leste and across the ASEAN region.
